G1 Phase

Table of Contents

Definition

  • also called First Gap.
  • It is called the first gap because, little change is visible.
  • the cell is just growing at this stage, no DNA replication or anything.
  • The cell is accumulating the building blocks of chromosomal DNA and the associated proteins.
  • The cell is also trying to build up sufficient energy to complete the task of replicating each chromosome in the nucleus.
  • Cell increase in size and volume.

Production

The cell is producing the following during this stage to prepare for S and M phase:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Lipids
  • Proteins
  • Enzymes

Checkpoints

"Ensure ordered progression through the cell cycle." (_Panagopoulos_ & Altmevyer, 2021)

  • also known as restriction point in yeast.
  • This is the G1 Phase and S Phase checkpoint.
  • Cell commits to divide if nutrients and cell size is sufficient.
  • Damages in DNA are also checked.

Stimulating Protein

  • Growth factors
  • Cyclin and Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK)
    • Combined to function in putting Phophaste in Proteins.

Inhibiting Protein

  • p53 protein
  • Retinoblastoma protein (Rb)
