Definition
- also called First Gap.
- It is called the first gap because, little change is visible.
- the cell is just growing at this stage, no DNA replication or anything.
- The cell is accumulating the building blocks of chromosomal DNA and the associated proteins.
- The cell is also trying to build up sufficient energy to complete the task of replicating each chromosome in the nucleus.
- Cell increase in size and volume.

The cell is producing the following during this stage to prepare for S and M phase:
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Enzymes
