Connective Tissues

Table of Contents

Definition

  • connects and joins the different parts of the body together.
  • The cells of the connective tissue are loosely packed and the space between the cells are filled with a jelly like matrix. (extracellular matrix)

Types

Bone

  • is a hard and strong tissue.
  • It consists of cells which are embedded in a hard matrix containing calcium and phosphorus compounds.
  • Bone forms the framework of the body and supports the body and the main organs.

Osteoblasts

  • mineralized connective tissue made by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts which deposit collagen.
  • The matrix of collagen is combined with calcium, magnesium, and phosphate ions to make the bone hard.

Osteons

  • Blood vessels and nerves are found at a central canal surrounded by concentric circles of osteons.

Types

  • Spongy
    • heads of long bones and inner layer of flat bones.
    • strong but porous.
    • also stores bone marrow.
  • Compact
    • no visible spaces
    • external layer of your bones
    • stores calcium

Cartilage

  • characterized by collagenous fibers embedded in chondroitin sulfate.
  • Cartilage functions as cushion between bones.

Chondrocytes

  • these are cells that secrete collagen and chondroitin sulfate.

Types

  • Hyaline
    • Most common type
    • Glassy looking
  • Elastic
    • more elastic fibers
    • can find ears
  • Fibro
    • thick fibers of collagen
    • good at withstanding a lot of pressure

Connective Tissue Proper

  • in short for CTP.
  • made up of loose connective tissue that is found in the skin and fibrous connective tissue that is made up of collagenous fibers found in tendons and ligaments.

Types

  • Dense Connective Tissues
    • Ligaments

      • are flexible tissues which joins bones together and helps in movements.
    • Tendons

      • are fibrous tissues which joins muscles to bones and helps in movements.
  • Loose Connective Tissues
    • Areolar Tissues

      areolar.png

      • fills the space between skin and muscles, inside the organs, around blood vessels etc.
      • It helps to repair the tissues.
    • Adipose Tissues

      adipose.png

      • is found below the skin and between internal organs.
      • It contains fats and helps to store fats.
      • This tissue is called adipocytes.
