Definition
- connects and joins the different parts of the body together.
- The cells of the connective tissue are loosely packed and the space between the cells are filled with a jelly like matrix. (extracellular matrix)
Types
Bone
- is a hard and strong tissue.
- It consists of cells which are embedded in a hard matrix containing calcium and phosphorus compounds.
- Bone forms the framework of the body and supports the body and the main organs.
Osteoblasts
- mineralized connective tissue made by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts which deposit collagen.
- The matrix of collagen is combined with calcium, magnesium, and phosphate ions to make the bone hard.
Osteons
- Blood vessels and nerves are found at a central canal surrounded by concentric circles of osteons.
Cartilage
- characterized by collagenous fibers embedded in chondroitin sulfate.
- Cartilage functions as cushion between bones.
Chondrocytes
- these are cells that secrete collagen and chondroitin sulfate.
